Cooper Barber Attends The Global Youth Institute

Updated: Jan 23

Written By Adam Wilke.

Sophomore Cooper Barber had the opportunity to attend the Global Youth Institute (GYI) from October 21-23. GYI is a small part of the World Food Prize organization that brings together students, teachers and leaders from around the world to discuss solutions to hunger and poverty. To be invited to GYI, Cooper first had to write a research paper about food insecurity around the world and attend the Iowa Youth Institute. This is an opportunity available to all FFA members in our chapter, and attending IYI also grants those planning on majoring in ag at Iowa State a $1,000 scholarship. Following this, Cooper was selected to present at GYI. During the conference, soeakers from all around the world presented about their work on food insecurity. Cooper says, "My favorite speakers from the week were José Andrés (Chef), Mashal Husain (President of World Food Prize), and Dr. Kenneth Monjero ("Dr.Fun"). They talked about their backgrounds and global food security in a fun and engaging way. Cooper also had a great time meeting new people and making new friends. Students have opportunities to interact with each other outside of presenting their papers. Cooper had an amazing time at the Global Youth Institute, and we hope to see many more members attend in the future.
